Hi everyone!
I am looking for an experienced beta reader with a deep knowledge of B5 canon (or who is willing to learn!) to help me with a project I am working on. I am a professional editor and experienced writer, so I really don’t need much help with grammar/spelling/punctuation, and I already have several internet and RL friends who can read for pacing, development of suspense, and the like. What I need is someone with a passion for the subject matter, who can help both with canon research (this work is NOT AU and is meticulously canon consistent), and with larger, more “big picture” development of the project, as well as working with me to help ensure that different subsections work together smoothly and form a coherent whole.
I have been working on this project, in one form or another, nearly daily for over two years, in between my “real life” professional commitments. I take this project very seriously and am looking for betas who can work with that level of dedication and persistence! :-)
Project description:
In Book 3 of the Psi Corps Trilogy (Final Reckoning), Bester reflects, as he thinks about what book he might write, “It wasn’t his story he wanted to tell, but the story of his people. Of all his people, even those who had betrayed him, or worse, their own kind.”
This is, in essence, that book, though it comes about in a somewhat different way. In the aftermath of the Telepath War (known in the community as the Crisis), the main character (herself a telepath) is collecting a series of stories from other telepaths, chronicling through their varied personal narratives the collective history of her people. Her work aims to preserve these stories for future generations, who don’t (directly) remember life before the war, so they can find answers to the questions they will ask themselves one day when they grow up: who are we? who were we? and what happened to us?
This is a project that aims to fundamentally reframe and refocus canon: not to parrot the same old normal-centered narratives “about” telepaths, but to present telepaths’ narratives of their own lives (especially the perspective of telepaths in Psi Corps, whose perspective is even more invalidated by canon’s bias). This project centers the perspectives of this marginalized, insular and culturally distinct (though itself quite heterogeneous) telepath community, thereby challenging and even subverting the limited presentation given in canon.
It is, in a nutshell, the “other side of the story,” the side canon never told you.
Individual sub-fics (all of which stand alone) take place in different times and cover different subjects, so if something is a trigger for you, it is still possible to help out with the project, in other areas.
Interested betas are welcome to contact me here or at tesseract at operamail dot com. If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer them for you. Please also feel free to pass this along to anyone you may know who may be interested in my work, or in helping out.
Thank you!
