[personal profile] under_the_silk_tree
Fandom: Due South
Characters/Pairings: Vecchio x Fraser x Kowalski
Rating & Warnings: PG/minor character death
Estimated Fic Length: 2,856
Notes: This story has been half finished on my hard drive for a couple of years and I finally finished it for h/c bingo.  This is basically Vecchio figuring out where he belongs.

doranwen: female nerds, rare and precious (Default)
[personal profile] doranwen
Fandom: Rookie Blue
Characters/Pairings: Sam/Andy eventually, other minor pairings tbd
Rating & Warnings: PG-13
Estimated Fic Length: no idea other than LONG (I've got 7k already and it's barely begun)
Notes: This is an AU beginnings fic that'll span *years*, with a happy McSwarek ending. I already have a rough outline spanning most of the time, but need to fill in some of the details and keep track of threads. I'm most worried about my characterization/dialogue, particularly since I'm tweaking some variables that'll majorly affect Andy's personality, but will also welcome comments about flow or anything else that occurs to the reader. There's no deadline on this, it's just for the fun of it, but I won't be posting it on AO3 until it's finished, so I'd really love to have someone to bounce ideas off and cheerlead so I won't get stuck on something and stall. I've done a bunch of research on details but I sometimes have trouble figuring out what someone would do in a given situation.

I have the first little bit of the fic posted to my DW for anyone who wants to see what I have so far. It hasn't had any eyes other than mine on it yet.

I'll have the fic in a Google document for the characterization and other comments. I do best with live chatting as far as brainstorming/hashing out stuff goes and can do either Gmail chat or IRC. (Supposedly Google docs has a chatting option? Never tried it but am willing to if that works best.)

Fandoms: Early Edition and Highlander: The Series
Characters: Gary Hobson, Marissa Clark, Methos, no pairings.
Ratings/Warnings: PG/PG-13, show-typical drama and violence.
Wordcount: 10k+ and counting

Reason for the Request: I have been toiling over this fic for years now and have failed in my goal to get it finished before the start of 2018.

It is a crossover between Early Edition and Highlander: The Series. The premise of the fic is loosely based on another fanfic, The Snow Leopard’s Armed Intervention series, with regards to the Cat's origins. The fic is based on Gary's POV regarding the Paper, the Cat, and the mysterious man he saves (Methos) who remains an enigma to both the audience and to Gary. I have tried to write the fic so that someone who has never seen Early Edition is not immediately lost.

I have the plot laid out, and a general idea of how I want it to reach the end. At present, I need a fresh pair of eyes to look for potential plot holes and to make sure what I have so far makes sense. My biggest failings are scene dialogue, maintaining character voice, and over-detailing descriptions.

I have not had a beta in a long time so I request any critique be gentle.

The fic is currently hosted on Google Drive and it is my goal to finish it before I post any of it to Ao3. If interested, please PM me.

Fandom: The Librarians
Characters/Pairings: Eve Baird/ James Moriarty
Rating & Warnings: PG/None
Estimated Fic Length: 2200
Notes: This is an AU fic.  Basically Eve never received a letter from the Library.  Instead she meets Moriarty first.  This changes things.  Mostly needs grammar help.

Fandom: NCIS: New Orleans
Characters/Pairings: Loretta Wade x Dwayne Pride

Notes: This is a get together fic that is mostly fluff. I mostly need grammar help but if you are familiar with the show that would be a perk

Thank you!

Fandom: Girl Meets World
Rating: Typically, I’m writing between T-M rated content.
Spoilers/Time Line: None. My writing is usually AU, PU, or future set. However, I can think of one spoiler for sure; don’t know if I’ll mention it though.
Pairing: Rilaya (Riley/Maya)
Beta Type: SPaG, content, plot/idea help.
Warnings: The story I’m planning at this point does not deal with any triggers. However, it does feature a same-sex female pairing. Cursing will take place, but not heavily. No offensive remarks or any other offending material is planned or expected to happen.
Harshness: On a scale of 1-10, I’m ideally looking for a 6. Basically, just be respectful and explain any edits/suggestions. My writing is very important to me and I don’t take well to receiving it back covered in red ink. You need to strongly back-up your suggestions (besides technical ones) in order for me to not become offended. Telling me to remove, reword, or that something doesn’t make sense without the explanation really doesn’t help me at all. I want to grow, not shirk.
Other: Okay, I have a few things for this section…

I’ve had one heck of a time trying to find a beta in this fandom and that screws me over for several reasons. You do not have to be in the fandom or even watch the show to help. Like mentioned, my stores are not set within canon world or timeline. Anyone with a critical eye and passion to help can do this job.

I’d really like to find someone who’s in a time zone that’s friendly to mine. Would love to have a partnership with said person and feel comfortable enough to share plot ideas and grow stories from them. An individual with the time needed to provide beta services is very important and required.

If you're curiously about my writing style, length, or whatever...

Fandom: Teen Wolf, The Flash, iZombie, Harry Potter
Characters/Pairings: Derek/Allison, Stiles/Derek, Cahrlie/Neville, Liv
Rating & Warnings: Everything is G right now.
Notes: I need mostly help with SPaG and phrasing.
So there are wo comment fic fests going on. They look like tons of fun and although I've a bit of writer's block right now I think I can manage a couple of short pieces. I've written 4 by now, all of them around 200 words. They are short and sweet and hopefully won't be too much work but because I'm no native speaker I would feel better if someone could take a quick look before I post them. There's nothing worse than a short text riddled with mistakes.
I plan to write a bit more for both fests. So if a potential beta would be up to look over some more short comment fics (probably about 5-10) that would be great. Although right now I need help with the 4 short comment ficlets I already have.
I don't mind a harsh beta if it's constructive criticism.

2. Fandom: ARROW (but it’s also a fusion with Spartacus)
3. Rating of the story: NC-17
4. Spoilers/Time Line: There’s probably spoilers in regards to the Spartacus timeline, but there shouldn’t be any spoilers for ARROW.
5. Pairing: Oliver Queen/Thea Merlyn & several side pairings.
6. Beta Type: Primarily I need a beta with expertise in or knowledge of Ancient Rome, to make sure that my story isn’t off in accuracy, but I can always use the typical spelling, plot, and grammar as well.
7. Harshness: I have no opinion on this matter.
8. Other:
  • In this tale, Oliver and Thea are NOT related.
  • I need a beta who will stick with me for the entire length of the story as it is a work in a progress.
  • I don’t know how long the entire story will be yet, but the first chapter is approximately 8,500 words in length.

Hey there, I managed to finish my first English language fic today and I'm looking for a native English speaker to give it a look before I embarrass myself.

If you happen to be familiar with the show I'll gladly accept criticism on characterization and any concrit you might have is appreciated but since I'm ESL I'm mainly looking for feedback a la "That word doesn't mean what you think it means", "That word belongs at the end of the sentence" or even "I can't exactly tell why, but that sentence just sounds really weird to me."

(X-posted to Livejournal and Tumblr)

Hi everyone!

I am looking for an experienced beta reader with a deep knowledge of B5 canon (or who is willing to learn!) to help me with a project I am working on. I am a professional editor and experienced writer, so I really don’t need much help with grammar/spelling/punctuation, and I already have several internet and RL friends who can read for pacing, development of suspense, and the like. What I need is someone with a passion for the subject matter, who can help both with canon research (this work is NOT AU and is meticulously canon consistent), and with larger, more “big picture” development of the project, as well as working with me to help ensure that different subsections work together smoothly and form a coherent whole.

I have been working on this project, in one form or another, nearly daily for over two years, in between my “real life” professional commitments. I take this project very seriously and am looking for betas who can work with that level of dedication and persistence! :-)

Project description:

In Book 3 of the Psi Corps Trilogy (Final Reckoning), Bester reflects, as he thinks about what book he might write, “It wasn’t his story he wanted to tell, but the story of his people. Of all his people, even those who had betrayed him, or worse, their own kind.”

This is, in essence, that book, though it comes about in a somewhat different way. In the aftermath of the Telepath War (known in the community as the Crisis), the main character (herself a telepath) is collecting a series of stories from other telepaths, chronicling through their varied personal narratives the collective history of her people. Her work aims to preserve these stories for future generations, who don’t (directly) remember life before the war, so they can find answers to the questions they will ask themselves one day when they grow up: who are we? who were we? and what happened to us?

This is a project that aims to fundamentally reframe and refocus canon: not to parrot the same old normal-centered narratives “about” telepaths, but to present telepaths’ narratives of their own lives (especially the perspective of telepaths in Psi Corps, whose perspective is even more invalidated by canon’s bias). This project centers the perspectives of this marginalized, insular and culturally distinct (though itself quite heterogeneous) telepath community, thereby challenging and even subverting the limited presentation given in canon.

It is, in a nutshell, the “other side of the story,” the side canon never told you.

Individual sub-fics (all of which stand alone) take place in different times and cover different subjects, so if something is a trigger for you, it is still possible to help out with the project, in other areas.

Interested betas are welcome to contact me here or at tesseract at operamail dot com. If you have any questions, I’ll be happy to answer them for you. Please also feel free to pass this along to anyone you may know who may be interested in my work, or in helping out.

Thank you!

Hello! I've caught up on tags again to prepare for the new year.

Another reminder that I won't add a tag for a specific fandom until at least two different people post about that fandom on the comm. If you don't see your fandom in the tag list, you're proably looking for a catch-all tag:
  • fandom: animanga series
  • fandom: books (other)
  • fandom: movies (other)
  • fandom: none/original fiction
  • fandom: nonfiction
  • fandom: tv shows (other)
  • fandom: video games (other)
  • fandom: webcomics (other)
  • fandom: web series (other)
  • fandom: western animation (other)
  • fandom: western comics (other)
I regularly go through the catch-all tags to see if there are any doubles that need to be moved to a tag of their own. If you want to get your own fandom tag faster, encourage your friends to use this comm too! :D

I've also added the new tag "fandom: star trek (reboot)", to try and differentiate the newer movies from the older tv series and movies. We've not yet had more than one person asking for betas in each individual star trek series, which is why they're still using the catch-all "fandom: star trek series."

If there's anything else I can do to make the comm's tag system easier to use, please let me know. Thank you for using [community profile] betaplease and happy new year! Please remember to tag your posts!

Fandom: Andromeda
Characters/Pairings: its AU setting set shortly after the events of the 3rd season episode "The Unconquerable Man" featuring Gaheris Rahde, Beka Valentine, Rommie and Seamus Harper
Rating & Warnings: Probably no more than PG 13, shading into R. It for Round 3 of the mulitfandom Journey Story 3.0 Big Bang and clocks in at just over 10k.
Notes: Looking for basic mechanics, verb tense agreement, spelling, grammar, story flow, continuity. The draft is due to the mod for the purposes of artist claiming by the 2nd of November, but the final thing isn't due until early January. I use Libreoffice, which is as close as I can get to MS office, but it's a docx file format. Just a heads up.

note to Mod: I think I need a fandom tag for Andromeda.

Thanks and take care, karrenia

Fandom: Castle
Characters/Pairings: Ryan/Esposito, mentions previous Jenny/Ryan
Rating & Warnings: NC-17/Explicit, possibly mild dubcon, shooting aftermath.

Notes: The basic premise is that while things were still all crazy from the season 4 fallout between Ryan and Esposito, Ryan is very nearly killed, which prompts Esposito to re-evaluate their history -- and their future. (And if you're not that familiar with the canon fallout, I think I do a pretty good job of providing enough context.)

I do my best to paint Ryan as bi and knowing it from the start (though closeted to most people), because I don't want to erase his canon history with Jenny, but I also clearly have to diverge from it. Esposito...takes a bit of a journey when it comes to sexual identity, and the fic is really more his story than anything. He just strikes me as the sort who would see himself as super-straight. And when he starts hooking up with Ryan, it's something that he's really selfish about, because he doesn't want to think of himself as anything other than a straight dude -- and really, doesn't want to think about it at all.

But then, as he's forced to confront all these things he's tried to ignore, his perception of who he is and what they mean to each other begins to shift.

I've posted restricted chapters to my journal and screened comments, so if you would like to beta this fic, comment here and I'll grant you access.

Fandom: Facts of Life
Characters/Pairings: Jo/Blair, Cindy/Sue Ann
Rating & Warnings: PG-13. Femslash, Mild Language
Notes:

Hi, I'm looking for a beta-reader to review my Facts of Life story I am currently writing. It's called "Body Language" and it's based on the first season of FoL, so no Jo/Blair but instead Cindy/Sue Ann. I already have it up on FF.net and currently chapter 24 is up. I had someone beta-read it up to chapter 14, so I'm looking for someone to beta-read it from chapter 15 on.

Main priority would be grammar and punctuation, and in addition story flow and characterization. Knowledge of late-70s/early-80s pop culture is helpful, but not necessary.

I also have another FoL fan-fic going on called "Wedding Bells Are Ringing". This one take place in 2011, and it's Jo/Blair along with Cindy/Sue Ann. The needs are the same as for "Body Language", but it's not my main fanfic right now.

Fandom: Once and Again
Characters/Pairings: Jessie Sammler/Katie Singer
Rating & Warnings: PG-13 (possibly M). Femslash, Mild Language, Violence, Possible Sex Scenes
Notes:

I am doing a Once and Again fanfic called Deja Vu. Part of it is also based on the late-70s/early-80s time period, so knowledge of that era is a BIG PLUS. Five chapters are already done and the main things are grammar, punctuation, story flow, and characterization.

I am also doing an another Once and Again fanfic called Way out West. This one takes place during the Wild West, but it's a crack fic, and basically the exact opposite of Deja Vu. Two chapters are done already and I'm looking to get out of my writer's block for this story.

Fandom: Taggart

Characters/Pairings: Robbie, Jackie, Matt, Duncan, Mita, Karen and Stuart; with Robbie/Jackie ship

Rating & Warnings: NC-17. Historical domestic violence, historical child abuse, murder, sex and suicide

Notes: It's set post series with references to several earlier eps and the first draft is finished and around 13k, there is 10 chapters + prologue/epilogue. I need any repetition pointing out as well as odd looking sentence and paragraph structures, some SPAG too. I also need to know that the story and timeline(s) make sense too. As the fandom is tiny I'm not expecting canon knowledge but I do know enough to answer any questions that might crop up.
