Hello! I've caught up on tags again to prepare for the new year.

Another reminder that I won't add a tag for a specific fandom until at least two different people post about that fandom on the comm. If you don't see your fandom in the tag list, you're proably looking for a catch-all tag:
  • fandom: animanga series
  • fandom: books (other)
  • fandom: movies (other)
  • fandom: none/original fiction
  • fandom: nonfiction
  • fandom: tv shows (other)
  • fandom: video games (other)
  • fandom: webcomics (other)
  • fandom: web series (other)
  • fandom: western animation (other)
  • fandom: western comics (other)
I regularly go through the catch-all tags to see if there are any doubles that need to be moved to a tag of their own. If you want to get your own fandom tag faster, encourage your friends to use this comm too! :D

I've also added the new tag "fandom: star trek (reboot)", to try and differentiate the newer movies from the older tv series and movies. We've not yet had more than one person asking for betas in each individual star trek series, which is why they're still using the catch-all "fandom: star trek series."

If there's anything else I can do to make the comm's tag system easier to use, please let me know. Thank you for using [community profile] betaplease and happy new year! Please remember to tag your posts!

[community profile] betaplease is happy to support fiction exchange participants who are looking for beta-readers. However, you should protect your anonymity when posting here, because most exchanges like gifts to be an anon surprise.

To that end, you can use a few strategies:
  1. The easiest one is simply don't mention that your fic is an exchange gift. That's usually enough to maintain your anonymity.

  2. If you think that won't be enough, you can also post to this exchange using a sock/throwaway account that isn't easily traceable to you. That way, even if someone realizes you're writing a fic for a specific exchange, they won't be able to tell who you are.

  3. As an alternative to #2, you may also ask someone else to post your beta-reader request to this community on your behalf. These kind go-betweens are often called Hippos in the world of exchanges. You can find your own go-between, or if you'd like to offer your Hippo services, kindly comment on this post so that people can reach out to you.
Exchanges are wonderful! The joyful surprise of anonymity is wonderful, too. Let's all do our best to preserve and support both. ♥
merrileemakes: (tree)
[personal profile] merrileemakes
Fandom: A tiny space fandom that I won't name for reasons. There is virtually no canon in the story and can be read canon free.
Characters/Pairings: None
Rating & Warnings: G, no warnings
Estimated Fic Length: 1000-2000 words
Notes: This is a short canon-free story set in a very nebulous fandom. I'd love for a beta to read for sense, structure and general readability.
malymin: Duck from Princess Tutu, as a duck. (duck)
[personal profile] malymin

Fandom: Princess Tutu

Characters/Pairings: Mytho and Rue.

Rating & Warnings: Unrated. Not entirely sure what warnings to put on it (may need help with that too), would probably consider it rated Teen at the moment. There's some themes of unreality and depersonalization, at least.

Estimated Fic Length: Currently at 5,889. Not sure how much longer it will end up being.

Notes: This started as a series of post-canon oneshots and twoshots with shared continuity and themes published on Cohost. Before Cohost shut down, it was strung together hastily into three fic entries and posted on Ao3 without proper forethought - I regret not asking a beta reader for input at the time. Need input on overall structure and on how the published chapters "come across" in characterization and tone. Particularly need input on the fic within the series labeled "Magpie," as I'm less confident in its function as a cohesive whole than "Glamour."

Thematically, I'm trying to explore the potential complications of Rue and Mytho's "happily ever after" - ways that they could struggle to fit inside the story-world, that old traumas could cause strain on their marriage, etc. I'm more interested in writing a "messy" or "toxic" relationship (with individual fluffy moments) than a wholesome happy ending here, so keep that in mind.

A few potential new chapters have been drafted for months now, but I've been holding off on publishing them because I want to "clean up" the existing fic - may ask for input on them later.

queervanilla: (Closed eye baby Mel)
[personal profile] queervanilla
Fandom: Arcane
Characters/Pairings: Meljayvik
Rating & Warnings: Explicit. Features D/S, Mommy/Daddy kink, Pup kink
Estimated Fic Length: over 8k
Notes: Need help with grammar, phrasing, and some sentence structure.
scifirenegade: (kurt/paul)
[personal profile] scifirenegade
Fandom: Anders als die Andern | Different from the Others (1919)
Characters/Pairings: Else Sivers, Paul Körner
Rating & Warnings: General and gen
Estimated Fic Length: over 700 words
Notes: I'm mostly looking for SPaG, any inconsistencies in the writing and ways to better show the characters bonding. I feel the ending is quite abrupt too.
I understand if the source material is niche. The Wikipedia page has a pretty good summary.

Hello, this is your mod. I've finished cleaning up the tags for the new year.

I'm starting to notice that some people are using this community in an attempt to find an editor for their full, original novels - works 50,000+ words or more. I worry that [community profile] betaplease is being used to take advantage of beta-readers for commercial work. This is a space for fandom and fandom-adjacent works, and part of the spirit of fandom (on the fic side, anyway) is that we do not make money on our editing or writing.

After some thought, I've decided the rule is, if you are intending to publish your writing with the goal of making money, it does not belong here on [community profile] betaplease.

If you are publishing your work with the intent of making money, you should be paying an editor for a professional pass. This is for three reasons:

  1. If you are trying to make money on your work, asking someone else for free work so that you can profit is unjust and disrespectful.

  2. Frankly speaking, it is extremely unlikely that you are going to find any editors who are willing to edit a piece of that length for free. Even 10k can be exhausting, especially if you are expecting a professional level editing job.

  3. If you are publishing in a commercial capacity, then your work should get a more professional type of editing pass than what we here in this community can give for free. The amount of effort an editor is going to give a story of over 50,000 words, to a stranger, for characters they don't even know and aren't guaranteed to enjoy reading about, for free, is minimal. You and your readers deserve more than the bare minimum.

I myself have worked as a professional freelance editor for over 15 years. I made this community because I love editing and I love fandom, and I want to support both. Using this community to find free editing for commercial projects feels like you're not respecting editors and our craft. Editing, just like writing or art, is a skill that is honed through years of effort.

With that said, I am not banning original fiction, and any novel-length works posted to [community profile] betaplease before now will be allowed to remain. And of course, if you are looking for an editor for your 50,000+ word original fiction that you plan to publish on AO3 and are never going to try to make money on, by all means, you are welcome here. However, if I notice continued posts in this direction from this point on, I will return this space to being strictly focused on fandom works only. I have also updated the rules to be explicit on this point.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for always supporting this small community. Best wishes to your writing and editing adventures in the new year.

Fandom: Ghost + The Mechanisms crossover
Characters/Pairings: Papa V/ Ghouls, hints of Copia/Ghouls, squint and you miss it Papa V/Jonny d'Ville (They insist on a sequel…)
Rating & Warnings: Overall E due to some ghoul orgies, gore and violence, temporary character death (including one immortal character shooting himself out of boredom)
Estimated Fic Length: 48-49k
Notes: This is for a big bang, the deadline is November 30th. I'd need this beta'd some time before this date.

If you'd like to beta this, I'm mostly looking for SPAG. But if you find kind words about what works and what reads off, I'd be happy, too.

The premise of this story: Ghost meet the Mechanisms but make it Cosmic Horror Sailor Moon

Papa V wants to connect with his grudge-holding twin, while Ivy Alexandrina searches for a tome in the Ministry's library. Shenanigans ensue, people get ripped apart and the Vatican gets spaghettified as we discover the secret behind the Emeritus bloodline.

Beta Reader Call!

Hi friends! I’m looking for a beta reader (or two) to give feedback on my VERY rough completed first draft of a contemporary queer romance/WLW novel. It’s a heartwarming, emotional, and intimate story about two best friends who end up in a surprise Vegas marriage—only to discover they’re expecting a baby.

Genre: Contemporary WLW Romance / Queer Domestic Drama

Length: Approx. 60,629 words (I’m looking to get it up to 70k)

Content Tags: Accidental pregnancy, friends-to-lovers, secret marriage, queer rep, chosen family, birth scenes, emotional healing, moderate spice, single-parent backstory, hurt/comfort

CW: Pregnancy complications (non-fatal), difficult ex, fertility struggles (in epilogue)

Looking for feedback on:

  • Character development + emotional arcs

  • Pacing and structure

  • Believability of relationship progression

  • Any parts that felt confusing, repetitive, or lacking payoff

  • General impressions and reactions

  • Continuity

If you love messy love stories, slow burn emotional intimacy, and queer joy with a sprinkle of angst and domestic fluff, this one’s for you.

Note: I’m chronically ill and have been writing this story in pieces since 2022- some things may not make sense or line up due to my illnesses and how I’ve been writing (damn brain fog and forgetfulness). Continuity checking is important.

I cannot provide swap services at this time. I work and I’m in school on top of being ill.

I’m a sensitive person when it comes to my art. Offer me advice wrapped up in praise and not just harsh red pen all over my work.

Just drop a comment or DM me. Thanks in advance for your time and support!

verylongfarewell: (rainbow summer.)
[personal profile] verylongfarewell
Fandom: Original (The Lover of Lilith)
Characters/Pairings: (Virgin) Mary/Lilith
Rating & Warnings: Explicit; since this story is based on the myth of Lilith and the portrayal of Mary in the Bible, religious themes are unavoidable; first time sex and also magical F/F impregnation (not futa).
Estimated Fic Length: 6K
Notes: This short story is for a submission call. I already have an editor looking at it, but I could use a second pair of eyes. I'm ESL and while some of my Danglish (Danish-English) is intentional, some of it is not, and I could really use some help weeding out the latter. I could also use a more trained smut gaze than my own on the sex parts. I use a deliberately flowery language, but I still want it to read as "proper" smut and could use help there.

Fandom: Original (No Room In the Inn)
Characters/Pairings: (Virgin) Mary/Lilith
Rating & Warnings: Mature; portrayal of pregnancy and childbirth; coming out-metaphors and a general allegory for LGBT+-people getting thrown out by parental figures.
Estimated Fic Length: 1500-ish words
Notes: Same as above, minus the submission call and sex parts.
grimmrow: (LAS :: I see what you have there)

Looking for Betas
Fandom: Original Work
Characters/Pairings: Het pairings so far, but it's only book one at this time.
Rating & Warnings: Cursing, blood, torture, and such like that. Supernatural creatures, has teens but it's an adult book. Actually without the cursing it could be a gen work. I don't focus too much on romance but instead friendships. Later installments will have romance however.
Estimated Fic Length: 40,000 to 80,000 words.
Notes: The fanfic isn't fully written yet. I did a rough outline so I can write the full work in a little bit. I'm just getting two or three people to become part of my life in the mean time, so I can shower with virtual hugs and kisses for helping me. It's Buffy the Vampire slayer inspired.

Looking to beta!
Fandoms: Original works, final fantasy, resident evil, silent hill, buffy the vampire slayer, the vampire diaries, supernatural (yes, please)
Strengths: I'm good at catching errors, mistakes, even sentence structure mishaps.
Limits: I'll beta anything except underage.
Other Notes: Nothing to say. Give me a reason to get back into reading more often.

The lakorn-novel I'm writing has a ways to go before it's ready for beta readers, but I'd like to know what others make of the end of one of the scenes. The friend who's read it missed part of what I had hoped to convey.

Fandom: None - original fiction. Genre is Thai lakorn
Pairings: het (OC)
Rating/Warning: No CW. Teen and up
Length: 614 words
Notes: See post intro. Impressions re the ending are fine. Anything else if you feel like it.

It's this post here.

Fandom: The SEAL Team
Characters/Pairings: Clay/Sonny
Rating & Warnings: Slash (more R than NC-17 if at all), fluff, canon divergence
Estimated Fic Length: Mostly around 1K, sometimes longer
Notes: Since English isn’t my first language, I’m looking for an English native beta, who can help me with SPaG (making suggestions how to fix odd expressions and such) and maybe tell me if something doesn’t work. I’m okay with constructive criticism, but please be kind/polite while expressing it. I’m looking for a permanent beta, if possible.

Pretty please and thanks a lot! ♥

[personal profile] yarnofariadne
Fandom: Merlin (BBC)

Characters/Pairings: Gwen/Lancelot

Rating & Warnings: explicit

Estimated Fic Length: 12K

Notes: This is my first time writing for this fandom and I'm scared :) I'm looking for a beta experienced in the fandom to evaluate whether my attempt at bridging show canon and mythology is successful. Aside from that, the usual beta concerns: does this make sense, is the character development believable, do you feel like anything's missing?
hagar_972: A woman with her hands on her hips, considering a mechanic's shop. (Default)
[personal profile] hagar_972
Fandom: Shadowhunters
Characters/Pairings: Ensemble piece, focusing primary on Alec, Jace, Izzy, Clary and Magnus, with the pairings Alec/Magnus, Clary/Jace and developing Simon/Maia, with a very strong focus Alec & Jace.
Rating & Warnings: rated T so no significant sexual content. Canon-typical violence, non-graphical. Major warnings for mental health stuff, primarily in earlier parts of the series. (i.e. not in the part being currently written - and I don't expect a beta coming in at this stage to backread!)
Estimated Fic Length: 20-50k
Notes: I am stuck on the final installment of this series. Importantly, I don't expect anyone coming in at this point to read all 208k existing words! The best summary for this series is that I take all the CPTSD in the show seriously so things are pretty awful for a while, and then they get really better. (At this part of the story, most of those themes are resolved, though Clary's still dealing from fallout of how her mom died and the Jonathan situation.) Additionally there are Jewish OCs and I'm trying to meld the show's worldbuilding with Jewish sensibilities. (I'm Jewish and have access to support on this front.)

In order to finish (and I'm quick once I get writing!), I need to be able to (1) talk with someone about the story and what's going on with it and (2) share parts of the story as I write them and receive emotional feedback.

Please talk to me if you think this may be of interest to you!

Asking for Help

There are some fandoms (for example, stargate) where individual series (for example, stargate: atlantis) hit the threshold for making its own fandom tag. However, I don't know enough about the series to know whether it's more helpful for it have its own tag, or to stay in the group.

For example, in pokemon (my home fandom), pokemon has many different games and franchises: pokemon red, pokemon go, various pokemon anime and manga each with their own plot/characters, and so on. However, pokemon writers are generally familiar with almost all of it; we don't tend to hyper-specialize in one franchise. Therefore, if you want to find a beta, it's actually better for you to tag generally with "pokemon" so that everyone looks at it. It would be more tedious to make a beta-reader click through a dozen tags for a dozen titles when there is a reasonable chance that they could beta for all of them.

However, star trek fans seemed to strongly want each new title (Deep Space 9, Voyager, etc.) to have their own tag when they meet the threshold, so I assume that that is a fandom where there is not as much overlap as pokemon.

If you look at betaplease's tags and you think that your fandom would be best served by splitting individual titles up, please let me know with a comment. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Thank you one more time again for using [community profile] betaplease all these years. Best wishes to you and your fanworks!
tropicsbear: Lirin from Saiyuki grinning (Saiyuki: Hyper Lirin)
[personal profile] tropicsbear

Fandom: Saiyuki
Characters/Pairings: Koumyou Sanzo/Ni Jianyi | Ukoku, Sharak Sanzo, Genjo Sanzo, Kanzeon Bosatsu, Jiroushin
Rating & Warnings: Teen and up audiences, alternate universe
Estimated Fic Length: 2,037
Notes: I'm mostly looking for feedback on the flow of the story and if there are any repetitive sentence structures, words, expressions, etc. Since this is an AU, I don't think familiarity with the canon is needed but if you're familiar with canon and also have feedback on characterization, I'll gladly accept it!

Hi folks, I'm looking for lists of questions to ask my beta readers. Most such lists that I find by Googling assume that the work in question is fiction. But I'll be writing short pieces to post online that are on personal subjects--mental health, for instance. What would you ask beta readers of such work?
greendawn: the sun dawning on Eos (Default)
[personal profile] greendawn
Fandom: Vorkosigan books (through Civil Campaign, spotty on canon after that)
Characters/Pairings: Ivan Vorpatril/Byerly Vorrutyer
Rating & Warnings: Explicit; canon-typical homophobia and transphobia, nonconsensual body modification, underage
in that the case being investigated involves nonconsensual gender reassignment surgery being tested on teenaged sex workers

Estimated Fic Length: approx. 65,000, 10 chapters, complete (currently in editing)
Notes: I'm looking for two things; if you can offer one that's great! SPAG should not be a problem.
1) someone who knows Vorkosigan canon (I started writing this 10ish years ago and lost a lot of my notes on canon since, so if you can point out that someone's blond and/or died in MD, etc., that'd be wonderful) and
2) someone who can spot holes in a casefic (Ivan and By are not supposed to be good detectives, but I do want the deduction and denouement to make sense): a canon-blind reader is welcome but may be confused by the SF elements.

I'd like to start posting in September if possible, but that's open rn. I can share the first chapter if you want an idea of what the story's like.

Fandom: Tales of Arcadia
Characters/Pairings: Ensemble
Rating & Warnings: T
Estimated Fic Length: 45-50k words
Notes: I'm looking for a development buddy for the next installment in this series, which is a canon divergence AU kicking off about halfway through Trollhunters. So far I stuck relatively close to canon, but now I hit the part paralleling Wizards and RotT, and I'm about to throw 90-95% of canon through the window. I have a fairly good idea of where I want to get, but starting this is becoming a Problem.

Fandom: The Fraud Squad
Characters/Pairings: Anya Chen/Raina Chandra (F/F)
Rating & Warnings: T, references to past domestic violence and abuse, mild biphobia, mentioned homophobia, fatphobia, classism
Estimated Fic Length: ~8k words
Notes: I'm looking for a beta who's familiar with Singapore! More specifically: the fic contains Anya's first experience at a hawker center, as well as other scenes and conversations that I would appreciate a read on for cultural competency.

A kind reader was found, thank you!
